We congratulate the Western Australian Government for proposing the most responsible changes to gun laws in 26 years.

Not since firearms legislation was agreed after Tasmania’s Port Arthur massacre in 1996 – but never fully enacted – has a government acted so resolutely.

We commend the WA Government for having the courage to put community and police safety first.

The new laws propose a limit on the number of firearms a licence-holder can own and impose requirements for storage and safe-keeping.

The unnecessary proliferation of firearms in homes across Australia increases the risk of crime. We do not need private arsenals in our community.

Any government that fails to follow WA’s lead can no longer say stricter legislation is impossible: the WA government has set new standards. These limits will be Australian best practice.

Each state and territory will now have the choice: do they introduce new laws based on the WA model, and prioritise community and police safety?

Remember: Gun ownership is a privilege, not a right in Australia.

When it comes to guns, complacency kills.

About Gun Control Australia

Gun Control Australia believes in safe communities living without fear of gun violence. As the only organisation in Australia focussed solely on advocating for firearms policy that prioritises public safety, we represent the will of the majority of Australians who support uniform, effective and sensible firearms laws.
