WA gun safety laws published

Changes to Western Australia’s firearms laws published in December 2024 reveal a raft of dangerous-gun bans and other community safety restrictions.

Banned are all lever-release and button-release firearms and most lever-action .22 rifles.

To take effect on 31 March 2025, the new public safety regulations also limit centrefire rifles to 10 rounds, and turn-bolt and straight-pull shotguns to five rounds.

Under the Firearms Act 2024 and the Firearms Regulations 2024  most semi-automatic air rifles and pump-action shotguns will also be banned for use in shooting competitions in the state.

Hunting is now prohibited on all state land.

The new laws will affect existing gun licence holders and new firearm licence applicants alike.

Gun Control Australia applauds the WA government for taking a strong position on gun control and putting community safety first.
