Australia’s Gun Laws: Two decades on from Port Arthur

The Hon. John Howard in Conversation with Andrew Denton

Next year commemorates the 20-year anniversary of the Port Arthur massacre. The 28th of April 1996 will live in infamy as Australia’s worst gun massacre with 35 dead and 19 wounded. The legacy of the lives that were lost and damaged at Port Arthur was enshrined by the then Prime Minister, John Howard, in some of the world’s most courageous and determined gun laws.

The 1996 Firearms Agreement is globally recognised for its impact and success towards reducing gun violence in Australia.

The Hon. John Howard joins Andrew Denton in conversation about the legacy of his Government’s gun legislation, the current status of Australia’s gun laws and the lessons for the future.
